Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my knives take to sharpen?

In most cases it will be the next day, sometimes the same day. Across weekends or public holidays it may be a little bit longer.

How will I prepare my knives for transport?

The best way will be to wrap them in clean tea towel and put them in a plastic shopping bag, making sure all the edges are protected.

Why have your knives professionally sharpened?

A sharp knife is a safe knife, when you have to force a dull knife to cut accidents happen. You’ll enjoy you knife working to its potential, and its good for the environment as knife making is an energy hungry industry.

How much will it cost?

If you have five knives to sharpen it is $50, that includes pick up and delivery to all areas between Gordonvale and Palm Cove. One knife is $12.50, plus $10 pick up and delivery. We also do chisels, planer blades, scissors etc, prices available on request.

What if my knife is bent or chipped?

We can fix these issues depending on the severity, for mild repair jobs there is an additional charge of $10.

How should I care for my newly sharpened knives?

1. Hand wash and thouroughly dry your knives after use, never put them in the dishwasher. Some metals will discolour if left to dry on their own.

2. Use wooden or plastic cutting boards. Hard surfaces such as glass cutting boards, stone bench tops or even stainless-steel counter tops can quickly dull a knife. When scraping food off the board turn the knife over and use the spine, not the blade.

3. Knife blocks are useful provided the knife is on its spine. The gold standard for storing knives are on magnetic strips. Never store your valuable knives in kitchen draws, they will get damaged there.

4. Don’t use a cheap knife sharpening system or device – we can’t emphasize this enough. The action results in a poor edge and, more importantly, can cause concave hollows particularly in the middle of the blade.

5. Don’t  sharpen them on a grinding wheel. You will ruin the temper on a knife compromising its hardness. This method will quickly heat up the steel, making the steel soft, resulting in a dull edge more quickly.

6. Strop and hone regularly as required. A quick search on Youtube will have you mastering the simple technique in no time. Strop first, when this does not work then hone. After several honings and the knife is not at its best, it is time to arrange for resharpening.
